Shelf cloud spotted over Charlotte County

Shelf cloud spotted over Charlotte County A great example of a shelf cloud was photographed over the Tom Adams Bridge near Manasota Key as a line of rain moved over Charlotte County earlier Monday. In the NBC2 News viewer photo taken by Payla Kaye capturing the cloud, you can get an appreciation for how expansive these clouds can be when floating overhead.  Though shelf clouds can and do form during episodes of severe weather, they can also develop in more benign weather events like Monday [there were no tornadoes, severe thunderstorms or reports of strong wind gusts for instance with this shelf cloud]. This is important to realize, as shelf clouds are oftentimes assumed to always be connected with damaging winds or tornadoes.
